A Visit to SMP Bamboo in Wawewa, Sumba Barat Daya

A welcome dance at the small bamboo SMP (junior high) school at village Wawewa, Sumba Barat Daya, all on borrowed colorful outfits.

The students have to walk, often barefooted, for 10 – 12 km to the nearby junior high school SMP. Pak Agus (The school master) is a fine young man with 16 other new graduated teachers talked with the parents on the village about making simple SMP school. They agreed.

The parents donated a piece of land in a clift, donated bamboo and coconut trees. Then they started to build this simple school one and half year ago. Of course the teachers are doing the jobs prodeo, Voluntarily. On the first year they have 65 students, now these students are on the second year beginning. They are accepting the first year students now for about 60 students also.

the have to use the bamboo classroom in turns, and of course they do the education simply with whatever they can give.  Pres. Dara of the Rotary Club Bali Kuta, leads 8 Rotarians from D3420 and D3600 from Seoul Korea. The sttudents were waiting patiently because the Garuda flight from Bali was delayed.
