THE VISIT OF ROTARIANS FROM JAPAN

On 07 May 2011 we have 6 Rotarians Visitors from RC Sakai Naka D2640 to visit this poor area on the eastern part of Indonesia, Sumba Island, and met with the happy children of the school who just received an additional class room for multi purposes. The funding is from 3 Clubs: RC Sakai Naka, RC Tamla, RC Taichung Situen and the host clubs are the RC Bali Kuta and RC Bali Taman:

The children were dancing, we did not know that they have a traditional dance, although it needs to be polished but the original movements were very interesting. They also entertained us using flutes made of small PVC pipes, very interesting, and they also gather on that Saturday afternoon to listen to advises how they should study to be able to work better in the future.

It was such a happy moment, and the Japanese Rotarians were feeling very happy to be able to share their happiness. Happiness is becomeing bigger when it is shared, 4 of them have never been to Indonesia, and now they see the very poor part of the country and they were thinking to try to help again in the future.

When you wish to help children of Sumba, you can contact RC Bali Kuta and be partner in service with us. RC BALI KUTA, BALI, INDONESIA

To do more in Nias, together with other clubs in Indonesia we formed a committee “Nias rebuilding Projects” Chaired by PP Betty Muliadinata from RC Jakarta Metropolitan who now joined RC Jakarta Sentral and PP Atik from RC Jakarta Selatan who flew very often to Nias.

The committee with the help of Rotarians and friends in Australia has built a clinic that has 28 beds for the first aid before the patients can go home after recovery from an illness. When it was opened with a ceremony, all beds were already full, so it is really needed:

The Rotary Bali Kuta also have helped the fishermen with various wooden as well as fiberglass boats, before there were sent to Nias all tested on the waters of Bali First:

There were two Matching Grant Projects that are participated by RC Bali Kuta, those are a Van for gardening and a fourwheel ambulance that were needed because the road were all destroyed:

After visiting Nias island several times after Trunami and large eathquake of 8,9 SR that destroyed the island to the highest, we found a small village of Mandrehe where we were allowed to rebuild a school on a government school ground, the children learn in a simple shade:

With the funding we have collected everywhere, we have brought 20 medical doctors to Nias and 20 Medical doctors to Aceh fpr the first aid help, also brought tons of rice and sugar, built new water wells in meulaboh, distributing 14 tons of colthes send by Althea from Sydney, distributing via Yayasan Aceh seupakat 500 tons of water and biskuits from Rotaract Clubs of Macao.

Then we met with PP Betty Muliadinata of RC Jakarta Metropolitan and Catherine Mensana and Atik from RC Jakarta Selatan, we started to rebuild the above mentioned school for the Children of Mandrehe. Below were the process of building the school:

A lot of Rotary Clubs helping the funding: RC Bali Kuta, RC Jakarta Metropolitan, Jakarta Selatan, RC Bali Taman, RC Bali Nusa Dua, RC Bali Seminyak and other clubs. We also organize a Golf Tournament in jakarta toward the finishing of the school. Now it looked like these:

With this new school, the children of Mandrehe can study better, now we are still trying to do a Matching Grant for its furnitures and other needs for the school.

It was such a sad trip to be in Banda Aceh and Lhokna one week after the huge Tsunami that killed more than 174,000 people. This was a trip I will never forget in my life time, I cried everyday for the whole 3 days. I never saw such destruction before. At the airport of Medan, thousands of people queuing for a Garuda seat, and arriving on the dead city made me sick, afraid, disappointed and very sad. When a friend took me on a motor bike to the city, the military troop were trying to find 3000 until 5000 dead bodies in between the woods and remnants of the destroyed buildings.

We have brought 16 doctors and nurses with medicines to help with first aids, then we brought a few tons of rice and sugar and clothes. We managed to arrange 30 tons of clothes donated by Althea from Sydney sent through Bali. Also 500 tons of bisquits and water from the Rotaract club of Macao that was sent by boat via Belawan.

It was so terrible to see the whole thing begin 2005, one week after the Tsunami in Aceh. At that time the military men were still digging between 3000 to 5000 bodies from the remnants and the whole Aceh was very smelly.

RC Bali Kuta brought 10 tons of rice and 5 tons of sugar for the survivals and for the volunteers who help the victims. We also bought about 20 sets of kitchen utensils for 25 refugee camps. Helps were really needed.

With Matching Grant # 63169, with Rotary Club of Dronten, built 240 toilets in Sumba island with the budget funds of 200 toilets.
Kalakembe village in the Sumba island is a very dry village and therefore is very poor too. Only about 2 babies out of ten can survive the situation, with no water they can not manage to have proper hygiene and nutrias food, no fresh vegetables and no rice to plant.

Once a year they produce Cashew nuts, the only produce they can be proud of, because this cashew nut trees are the only trees survive the heat and dry land. But their cashew nut are sold to people from Surabaya untreated and so cheap prices, then the Surabaya merchant send them to Kerala India and they process them there, and surprisingly become the best nuts in the world.

If some one can build a factory to process their cashew nuts in Sumba, they will not only give a lot of jobs opportunity to the people but also better value added to their products. We hope that many more people will think about helping this very poor island and that they will be able to get a basic education and basic health.
Below are some photos of those toilets we built with MG # 63169

One of our Past President is the Hon. Consul of Germany, who has a lot of attention to help people in Sumba. With a few of his friends in Germany, they collected donations and built a nice school in Kalakembe Sumba. Here also RC Bali Kuta with MG # 68069 will provide water and school furnitures.

If any club in the world wants to build an extraordinary poor island of Sumba, you can mention your willingness to us Rotary Club Bali Kuta, we will work with you and it will make you and us very happy in helping others, a lot still to be done !
